Preparing Your HVAC System for Seasonal Changes

Preparing Your HVAC System for Seasonal Changes

You rely on your HVAC system to work efficiently all year to keep you comfortable. However, as the seasons change and we start to rely more heavily on heating than cooling, there are some HVAC maintenance tasks you can do to make sure your heating and cooling system keeps working effectively through Fall and into the Winter months. Let’s talk about preparing your HVAC system for seasonal changes.

What is Fall HVAC Maintenance?

Now that the leaves are turning and the temperature is starting to dip, you are probably preparing to switch your HVAC system over to the heat settings if you haven’t already. Here are a few Fall HVAC maintenance tips to help make sure your HVAC system is ready for the change of season.

  1. Check Your Thermostat - The first step is to check that your thermostat is functioning as it should be and that it is set to heating mode. If you have a reprogrammable thermostat, you will need to make the necessary adjustments to keep your home comfortable during the colder seasons.
  2. Clear Heating Vents - Sometimes, when we are not using heat, fixtures and furnishing are moved around and end up obstructing the heating vents. Before switching your HVAC unit to heat, moving rugs, furniture, curtains, or any other obstacles that may obstruct your vents is important. This is going to help make sure that there is an even distribution of heat throughout your home, and it will also help to reduce the risk of a fire.
  3. Inspect the Heat Exchanger - If your heat exchanger is damaged, there is a potential for a deadly carbon monoxide leak - even from the smallest of cracks. Having an HVAC maintenance technician inspect your heat exchange before switching on the heat this Fall is a good idea. This is not a DIY task, so getting professional support in checking this part of the system is important.
  4. Test Ignition & Burners - If you haven’t been using your heat through Spring and Summer, there is a good chance the furnace’s ignition and the burners have accumulated a little bit of dust or other debris. To make sure they are able to operate efficiently, you should make sure to clean them as part of your Fall HVAC maintenance program.
  5. Inspect the Ductwork - If your ductwork has any cracks or leaks, it could result in heat loss. This may, in turn, cause your HVAC system to have to work harder to heat your home, resulting in increased energy costs. As part of your Fall HVAC maintenance, you should make sure that all ducts are properly sealed and insulated.
  6. Check Your Carbon Monoxide Detectors - It is crucial that you prioritize the safety of yourself and your family, so make sure you test your carbon monoxide detectors and replace the batteries to make sure they are fully functional.
  7. Clear Around Outdoor Units - If you have an outdoor unit, you must make sure that the area around it is clear so that it isn’t going to get obstructed. Fallen leaves, overgrown plants, and other debris could block the airflow, resulting in decreased efficiency and higher energy bills. Aim to have at least 3 feet of clearance around the unit.
  8. Take Note of Unusual Smells or Sounds - One of the easiest ways to determine if something is going on with your HVAC system is to check for any unusual smells or sounds when you turn it on. Both of these can indicate a problem, and you will need to call an HVAC maintenance provider to take a look.
  9. Change the Air Filters - Your air filters will experience heavy use over the summer months, thanks to the increase in pollen and other pollutants. You should be cleaning or replacing your air filters on a regular basis anyway, but it is particularly important to switch them out at the end of summer before we head into Fall.
  10. Book a Service Call - While some of these checks can be done by yourself, sometimes it is just more convenient to leave it to the professionals. Save yourself some time and gain peace of mind by booking a season HVAC maintenance visit for a professional overhaul in time for Fall and Winter.

These are just a few of the tips that should be followed to prepare your HVAC system for Fall. If you are already having regular HVAC maintenance carried out by a heating and air conditioning company in Knoxville, they may already address these points as part of your scheduled Fall HVAC maintenance visit. Otherwise, you can take a look on your own, but we would highly recommend setting up regular HVAC maintenance in Spring and Summer in order to extend the lifespan of your HVAC system and make sure it continues to run efficiently. Don’t wait for the HVAC to break down in the dead of winter, leaving you shivering under a pile of blankets! Be proactive and arrange a Fall HVAC maintenance visit today and make sure everything is in great shape to handle the colder months ahead!
